Aveda Institute-Minneapolis, which was founded in 1982, is accredited by the National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts and Sciences (NACCAS). They provide opportunities for applicable learning and practice in the arts of cosmetology, esthetics, and total body wellness. Their goal is to prepare students for a gainful career with the skills and business knowledge needed to branch out on their own as professionals and future entrepreneurs, as well an increased awareness and sense of responsibility for the environment. The original campus is located downtown and is surrounded by many boutiques, restaurants, and a flourishing arts community that will be sure to inspire students.
Career Services
Although the focus at Aveda Institute is on learning and practice, job search skills, interview preparation, resume writing, and training on professionalism are an integral part of the curriculum. Also, a Career Coach is available onsite to assist students on an individual basis with job searching and review of resumes, as well to prepare for career fairs and to answer questions on self-promotional initiatives.
Furthermore, students are encouraged to take advantage of some engaging educational events. Some of these events include the Earth Month Fashion Show, Shades of Pink Fashion Show, and the Edwin Niell Full Potential Student Competition. Also, networking opportunities abound in the form of community and charity events, career fairs, and fashion start-up launches.
Aveda Institute is associated with numerous salons, spas, and Aveda Experience Center throughout the nation, and while the faculty provides sound instruction and guidance, job placement is not necessarily guaranteed. However, students will gain, through their training, the skills necessary for gainful employment and increasing their business.
Enrollment Process and Financial Aid
Prospective students will need to contact an Admissions Representative for a session on career planning. Also a completed application form with the application of $100. 00 will need to be submitted along with the following documents:
• Proof of age (i.e.: birth certificate, driver’s license, passport, etc.)
• Immunization Record as mandated by Minnesota state law
• Passing scores from entrance assessment (Two opportunities are given; if not passed on the second attempt, applicant will have to wait six months before taking the assessment again.)
Notice of acceptance or rejection will be issued in writing.
Upon gaining admission, students will need to submit the following forms:
• Completed enrollment contract (includes a $50 enrollment fee)
• High School transcript with graduation date or a copy of your GED transcript with date of completion (if homeschooled, evidence of completion in accordance with state law or state-issued credential for homeschooling)
• If planning on studying massage therapy, a massage waiver form.
Also, students can inquire about financial aid by contacting the Financial Aid Office at 1(800)274-6778. There are many options available based on student’s financial status, and the application process starts with filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (www.fafsa.gov) with the school’s code (014847), verification documents, and the Aveda Institute Financial Aid Supplemental Form prior to the deadline. For information on additional application requirements and deadlines, please contact the Financial Aid Office. Some possible avenues for financial help include Federal Pell Grant, Subsidized, and Unsubsidized Direct Student Loans, Private Scholarships and Grants, Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (SEOG), Minnesota State Grant (must be a Minnesota resident), Federal PLUS Loan, Loan Disbursement.
Available Programs
The Aveda Institute in Minneapolis offers three intensive and exciting programs that will prepare students for productive and lucrative careers. Additionally, the school is open to the public to provide salon services and treatments. The programs include Cosmetology, Massage Therapy, and Esthiology.
For each of these programs, students can select one of the following full-time schedules that best meets their needs:
• Tuesday through Friday 9:00 am to 4:30 pm and every Saturday 8:00 am to 3:30 pm. (A 45-minute break is included.)
• Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 9:00 am to 8:00 pm and every OTHER Saturday 8:00 to 4:45 pm. (A one-hour break is included.)
Cosmetology Program
This program focuses on cutting edge techniques in skin care, makeup, nail care, and hair cutting and styling. Through extensive, hands-on learning with guidance from our faculty of experts, students will sharpen your talents to provide excellent service in beauty and overall wellness. Students will also get a chance to work in the training studio providing free makeup touch-ups to clients.
This program requires 1550 hours total and may take 46 weeks to become a licensed cosmetologist. Job placement rate is 93% for students who underwent this program. Possible careers include hairstylist, makeup artist (salon; theatrical and performance), and manicurist/pedicurist.
Massage Therapy
For this program, the student can choose specialty areas, such as wellness practice in salons or spas, or chiropractic. Also, students can learn skills that relate to sports medicine and physical therapy. Curriculum and Practicum relate to anatomy, physiology, aroma ology, pathology, spa treatments, and body movement techniques. Additionally, students will utilize massage therapy suites that mimic an authentic spa experience for their guests.
As a licensed massage therapist, graduates will be able to move into a high-demand field where they will treat clients in a holistic manner. This program spans for 18 weeks with an 83% job placement rate.
Esthiology
Upon graduating from this program, the student will carry with them the latest techniques in skin care. Moreover, students are taught to utilize the purest skin care materials made from natural ingredients extracted from plants and flowers. They will receive hands-on practice the esthiology suites, where clients can bask in a relaxing and peaceful environment.
Completing this program requires 600 hours (possibly 18 weeks) of training, but becoming a licensed esthetician can be a rewarding experience as students learn how to provide supreme care to their clients.
This program carries an 82% job placement rate after graduation. Some possible career avenues entail working in spas, salons, clinics and even in retail or managing or owning one’s one skin care business.
