The first step is to decide if you want to attend a more traditional college campus or if you would like your training program online. The advantage of an online pharmacy technician program is it will allow you to keep a full-time job if necessary while you study at night or on the weekends. Going to an online school gives you more options when it comes to finding a school as well as often the colleges near you might not off pharmacy training.
When attending school you’ll typically take courses in pharmacy law, healthcare procedures, insurance billing and coding, anatomy and pharmaceutical calculations.
Once you find the school your next step is to determine if you want a short-term certificate based programs which usually last 9-12 months or if you want to earn your pharmacy technician degree. School will typically offer an Associate’s as well as a Bachelor’s degree. A certificate however is usually all that is required in order to find an entry level position after you graduate.
Salary
Most earn on average $34,320 per year however top pharmacy technicians that have years of experience can earn over $50,000. Currently the US has over 350,000 pharmacy technicians. If you are interested in starting a new career then we recommend earning your certificate program first. This will allow you to get a job to see if this is a career you would like to pursue.
