Located on the western side of Missouri near the junction of the Missouri and the Kansas River, Kansas City is the largest city in the state of Missouri and the 36th largest city in the United States by population. During the 19th century, François Chouteau, a French merchant came to the city from St. Louis to build a trading post for furs with the Native Americans. The city played an important role in the expansion of the United States. During the American Civil War, Kansas petitioned the United States to become a part of the Union as a free state where slavery will be abolished under the doctrine of popular sovereignty and it was successful. After the Civil war ended, the population of the city increased and by the beginning of the 20th century, Kansas City was the 22nd largest city in the United States by population. Political machines came into power during the early 1900s such as Tom Pendergast who built several structures and building all over the city including Jackson County Courthouse and Kansas City City Hall. After World War II, the city developed its suburban area with a streetcar system. Pendleton heights and Quality Hill were among the first suburbs in the city. By 1950, the were 12.2 per cent of African Americans in the city and right after the assassination of the Martin Luther King, the city incorporated the idea of the ‘American Dream’.
