Diesel engines are far superior to gasoline engines, for the most part. They are much more fuel-efficient, more durable and are generally more powerful than their gasoline cousins are. What you do not see often is diesel powered personal cars. Trucks and busses are much more common when it comes to diesel. The diesel is irreplaceable because diesel is the only power plant capable with generating the torque needed to move such big vehicles. However, this may be on the verge of changing.
Worldwide the production capacity for biodiesel from non-food stock crops increased 7-fold! That is a massive increase and many countries outside the US are investing heavily. This means that over the next ten years it is very likely that the number of biodiesel powered vehicles with increase dramatically.
So how do you slid into this new career? Well it starts with achieving certification as a Diesel Mechanic. Then you will need to branch into the field of Biodiesel systems. At present there are a growing number of 3 and 5 day intensive seminars that will help get you started. The first step is your Diesel Mechanic certifications. The requirements for this certification include both education and training programs conducted online and offline. These programs will take from 12 to 24 months. Then you must have at least two years' experience.
There are separate certifications needed for working on school buses and specialized heavy equipment. The average wages for diesel mechanics run between $15.00 and $25.00 per hour. This particular career is expected to experience six to eight percent job growth over the next ten years. However, those estimates are based solely on the existing, traditional industry. With global warming and world energy pressures, the future is certain to be very different and one of the areas of difference will be the demand for those with experience and training in diesel mechanics. This means that future job growth will trend higher than currently estimated. There are also a number of other technologies built on the model also in need of skilled professionals and if you have any interest at all, you should consider bring one of them.
